Adapting Ecosystems: Bridging Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in Brazilian Landscapes through capacity building, knowledge exchange and simulation modelling; EcoBrazil.
Join our workshop on biodiversity and climate resilience in Brazilian landscapes from 11th to 13th August 2025 (dates may change slightly) at Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), Belém, Brazil
Rationale
Brazil is home to the biggest share of the Amazon and under the predicted 2-degree celsius overshoot, it is likely at risk of being severely affected (USAID, 2023). In the Amazon alone, more than 10,000 species are at risk of disappearing (Fabio, 2022). Hosting an extraordinary array of unparalleled biodiversity, Amazonia's global significance is underscored by a diverse ecosystem that can provide solutions to various biological challenges that are known to hold transformative potential, capable of yielding worldwide benefits for humanity. Its biodiversity is also intricately linked to global systems, influencing the carbon cycle and, consequently, climate change. However, the region is being cleared at an alarming rate for urbanisation. A new approach to the development of sustainable bio-economies is needed that supports climate resilience and sustainable urban expansion.
The EcoBrazil workshop focuses on the critical interplay between biodiversity and climate resilience. This is of utmost importance/timeliness due to its direct relevance to Brazil's economic development and social welfare. This project will bridge the gap between scientific understanding and practical application, designed to empower researchers, policymakers, and local communities by investigating and building capacity in ecosystem adaptation.
The immediate benefits of EcoBrazil include fostering partnerships to address research gaps and provide a platform for multidisciplinary collaboration. This will expand knowledge on sociobiology and address pressing challenges such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and the impact of climate change through developing actionable strategies that align with the priorities of the Amazonia+10 initiative. In the longer term, EcoBrazil aims to establish enduring research links between the UK and Brazil. Participants, including early career researchers, will benefit from mentorship programs and knowledge exchange.

Ecosystem Adaptation Workshop 11th -13th August 2025, Belem, Brazil
Join us for a transformative workshop on biodiversity and climate resilience in Brazilian landscapes.
The EcoBrazil workshop will strive to develop a research roadmap to simulate sustainable bio-economies: enabling farmers to see income streams from activities that protect the forest; bio-economy fisheries and aquaculture that can feed the world's growing population; and sustainable cities that are creatively planned for example. This will be achieved through the following objectives:
1) Foster the research capacity of Early Career Researchers (ECRs), experts from industry, and urban policy and planning makers in Brazil to brainstorm and suggest potential roadmaps for the future.
2) Explore digital solutions for socially disadvantaged communities to access basic needs and simulate scenarios for economic development.
3) Build & strengthen links for future collaboration of UK-Brazilian mature and ECRs and enhance their opportunities across borders & international collaboration.
4) Build the research capacity of ECRs, highlight positive aspects from a global perspective; and motivate young researchers to solve human rights and urbanisation problems.
5) Sustain the links after the workshop through joint publications and target further sources of funding to continue the research
6) Develop links between industry, academia, government, and NGOs to adopt the modern solution, bringing research results closer to market, for quick uptake & fast societal impact.
7) To enhance national capacity and expertise (amongst academics, youth expertise, the traditional indigenous population and other vulnerable groups) in participatory action research, sector studies and policy design
8) Disseminate the findings of this workshop through conference and open-access journal papers, websites of both universities and through a dedicated webpage developed for the EcoBrazil workshop.
The workshop will expose its participants to a global platform to highlight the challenges mentioned above and to develop a roadmap to address them.
