Empowering Ecosystems through Knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building in Brazil

The workshop "EcoBrazil" is designed to address the crucial and timely topics of ecosystem adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience with special focus on Brazilian Amazon forest. Some of the topics to be discussed are:

  • Understanding how ecosystems adapt to environmental changes.

  • Biodiversity Conservation in the Face of Climate Change to explore current challenges and innovative conservation strategies.

  • Building resilience in ecosystems, focusing on simulation methodologies to enhance the ability of Brazilian landscapes.

  • Emphasizing the importance of building local capacity and fostering knowledge exchange between Brazilian and UK researchers.

Brazil faces critical challenges due to climate change which poses a direct threat to its ecosystems and biodiversity that are integral to global environmental health and the well-being of local communities. By fostering international collaboration, between both countries, the workshop aims to create a synergy of expertise and resources, driving innovation in ecosystem management and conservation.

The main output of the workshop is both short and long-term research collaboration projects matching the strategic scientific developments of both Brazil and the UK. Some of the immediate outcomes can be:

1) Elevated research capacity through early and senior career researcher interactions and cross-country knowledge transfers.

2) Participants are expected to leave with a better knowledge of current research and gain advanced knowledge in ecosystem management, enhancing institutional expertise.

3) Instating collaborations and unleashing the creative potential in research through sharing expertise and planning.

4) Emerging cross-oceanic collaborations as a result of this workshop, in terms of joint research with concrete outcomes, such as papers in internationally renowned journals.

5) A research roadmap based on group discussions and multidisciplinary operations between academics as well as in collaboration with industry and funding agencies.

6) An essential aspect of economic and social progress is the development of closer ties between universities and industry. The suggested workshop proposes a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the industrial point of view and research.

Longer-term impacts will include:

-New research career opportunities through international networking between the early career and established researchers.

-strengthening the collaboration between UEMA and the UCEM through joint publications and funding research applications.

- the establishment of specific collaboration activities in both research and teaching across the partner institutions including jointly courses/sessions.

-Ongoing UK-Brazil research collaborations, leading to innovative solutions in biodiversity and climate change

-Participants' institutions become hubs for cutting-edge research in ecosystem protection.

-Local Brazilian communities benefit from applied research, improving socio-environmental health.
